He almost says that of course no one would put that in a book, but he's pretending not to listen to their nonsense. He doesn't understand it anyway; he doesn't care about art, or subversion, or counterculture, he just knows what the picture reminds him of.

'Water,' he says - does not call - and even though he's starving, he's not about to ask these people to get him food.
